A Fateful Encounter

On that sunny afternoon, Kara had no reason to suspect anything amiss when a friendly man in his late 30s approached her, offering pamphlets. He asked if her parents were home, to which she replied that she was at her friend’s house, and her friend’s mom wasn’t home either. The man seemed harmless, dressed casually in jeans, a button-down shirt, and a baseball cap. But in an instant, everything changed.

As he got closer, he pulled out a gun, pressing it against Kara’s neck, and forced her into a large storage bin in the back seat of his car. Fear gripped her, but Kara’s determination to survive remained unshaken.

The Will to Survive

Kara’s survival instincts kicked in as the man, later identified as serial killer Richard Evonitz, drove away with her. She began counting turns and noting details, hoping to find her way back home later. She remembered he was listening to classic rock music and smoking Marlboro red cigarettes. She even committed the serial number inside the plastic container, her temporary prison, to memory.

In the face of unimaginable terror, Kara stayed remarkably composed. She engaged with Evonitz, even offering to help him by sweeping his kitchen when he offered her food. This act of manipulation may have played a crucial role in her survival, as it helped build a sense of trust and rapport.

Sheriff Leon Lott of Richland County, South Carolina, later remarked on Kara’s exceptional composure, comparing her tactics to those of police negotiators. She was gathering information and developing a plan while keeping her emotions in check.

Escape to Freedom

After 18 agonizing hours of captivity and assault, an opportunity for escape finally presented itself. In the early hours, while Evonitz slept, Kara managed to free one hand from her handcuffs and remove a leg restraint. She quietly made her way to the front door and escaped.

Running toward a parked car, she desperately asked the occupants to take her to the police station, where she recounted her harrowing ordeal. With her guidance, officers returned to Evonitz’s apartment, aided by the keen observations of the apartment’s maintenance man. Inside, they discovered evidence of his horrific crimes, including newspaper clippings about three unsolved murders: Sofia Silva and sisters Kati and Kristin Lisk, who had disappeared more than five years prior in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.

Unfortunately, by the time authorities arrived at his apartment, Evonitz had already fled. A high-speed chase in Sarasota, Florida, ensued, ending when he ran over spike strips on the highway and was subsequently attacked by a police dog. In the end, Evonitz took his own life.

A Hero Reward

For her bravery and assistance in solving the murders of Sofia Silva and the Lisk sisters, Kara received $150,000 in reward money and had the opportunity to meet their grateful families. The closure she provided them was immeasurable, as it meant the person responsible for their daughters’ deaths would never harm anyone else.

Encouraged by Sheriff Lott, Kara took on a part-time job during high school and college, working in administrative roles with the sheriff’s department. She later became a school resource officer and an investigator specializing in child abuse and sexual assault cases.

After becoming a mother to two boys with her husband, Joe Chamberlain, Kara left her job in law enforcement.

Empowering Others

Kara’s life took another meaningful turn when she connected with fellow kidnapping survivor Elizabeth Smart. In 2019, she participated in a 90-minute Lifetime special, “Smart Justice: The Jayme Closs Case,” alongside five other survivors to support Jayme Closs, a Wisconsin teen who escaped her captor in 2019.

During this experience, Kara realized her larger purpose – to help others who had endured similar traumas. She felt healed and empowered by connecting with women who truly understood her journey. Recognizing the prevalence of sexual assault, Kara was determined to provide support to survivors who may never have the opportunity to speak with someone who truly understands their pain.

Kara collaborated with Elizabeth Smart to create the documentary, “Escaping Captivity: The Kara Robinson Story,” which was released on Oxygen in the past year. This allowed her to share her story on her terms and provide hope and encouragement to other survivors.

A Beacon of Hope

Kara’s commitment to empowering survivors goes beyond documentaries. She established a website where she shares her story and spreads hope and encouragement. Through social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, she reaches out to victims of crime, offering advice on healing and support, and fostering a survivor mentality.

One of her primary goals is to help survivors see themselves in others, recognizing the strength in shared experiences. She believes that providing survivors with the tools to take ownership of their stories can be immensely empowering.

Healing and Advocacy

Kara emphasizes the importance of healing, acknowledging that therapy is a valuable resource but may not be accessible or suitable for everyone. She has found solace in exercise and other healing practices like meditation, breathwork, and emotional freedom therapy. These tools help survivors address subconscious ideas related to trauma and their bodies.

Beyond her advocacy for survivors, Kara is working to overhaul victim representation in the media. Drawing parallels to intimacy coordinators on film sets, she envisions similar support for individuals working with victims. Kara believes there should be standardized guidelines for how victim stories are told and represented, ensuring their dignity and consent are respected.
