Maryanne Trump Barry, the oldest sister of former President Donald Trump, died at the age of 86 at her home in New York.
Barry served as a senior judge on the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, a level below the Supreme Court, until her retirement in 2019.
The New York Police Department stated that police were dispatched to Barry’s Manhattan residence shortly before 4:30 a.m. and discovered the body of an 86-year-old woman. The reason of death was unknown at the time. Her death was confirmed by a judicial official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because neither the court nor Trump’s family had publicly reported the news.
Donald Trump Jr., the former president’s eldest son, talked briefly about his aunt as he entered a Manhattan courthouse Monday, calling it a “rough day for myself and my family.”
After testifying in a civil fraud trial, Trump Jr. told reporters that he was informed of the news as he drove up to the courthouse Monday morning.

Barry worked as an Assistant United States Attorney before being appointed to the federal court in New Jersey by former President Ronald Reagan in 1974. Mr. Trump, 77, who is the Republican presidential front-runner while facing dozens of criminal allegations in four separate cases, has suffered a number of personal setbacks in recent years.
Maryanne Elizabeth Trump, the granddaughter of German immigrants, was born in New York City on April 5, 1937, to Fred and Mary (McLeod) Trump. Her father, a real estate developer and the source of the family’s riches, built hundreds of units in Brooklyn and Queens. Her mother was an immigrant from Scotland.
The family lived in Queens’ Jamaica Estates neighborhood. According to Judge Barry, “the first time I realized my father was successful was when I was 15 and a friend said to me, ‘Your father is rich.'” We were fortunate, but I had no idea.”
She attended the elite Kew-Forest School in Queens before graduating from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts with a bachelor’s degree in 1958. In 1962, she received a master’s degree in public law and government from Columbia University.
After 13 years as a stay-at-home mom, she went to law school at Hofstra University on Long Island, where she was the law review’s editor. In 1974, she graduated and proceeded to work for the government as an assistant federal prosecutor in New Jersey. She served as first assistant United States Attorney from 1981 to 1983, making her one of the highest-ranking women in a federal prosecutor’s office at the time.
Her 1960 marriage to David Desmond ended in divorce in 1980. In 1982, she married Mr. Barry. He died in the year 2000.
Her direct survivors include a younger sister, Elizabeth Trump Grau, and a son from her first marriage, David William Desmond, in addition to her brother.
