Oprah Gail Winfrey is an American philanthropist, television personality, actor, producer, and businesswoman. She was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, on January 29, 1954. Following a turbulent youth in a tiny rural town, when she experienced sexual assault at the hands of several male family members and acquaintances of her mother Vernita, she relocated to Nashville to be with her father, Vernon, a businessman and barber.

Her son was born prematurely and passed very soon after his birth when she fell pregnant at the age of 14. Winfrey then said that she thought the family member who had given the National Enquirer her son’s story in 1990 had betrayed her.

After experiencing early success in the Upward Bound program, she was moved from Lincoln High School to the affluent suburban Nicolet High School. There, she claims that being poor was a constant reminder of her situation, as she shared the bus with other African-American students, some of whom were household servants of her classmates.

In an attempt to keep up with her freely-spending contemporaries, she started stealing money from her mother. She also started lying to and arguing with her mother and going out with older boys. Her irate mother sent her to live with Vernon in Nashville, Tennessee, once more, but she did not bring her back this time. Vernon prioritized her schooling and was stern but supportive.

Winfrey joined her high school speech team at East Nashville High School, where she placed second in the country in dramatic interpretation, became an honors student, and was chosen as the Most Popular Girl.

She was awarded a full scholarship to Tennessee State University, a historically black college, where she studied communication, after winning an oratory competition. When she was a teenager, her first job was at a nearby grocery shop. Winfrey took first place in the Miss Black Tennessee beauty contest at the age of 17.

Additionally, she caught the interest of WVOL, the local black radio station, which recruited her on a part-time basis to cover news. She worked there twice: once in her first two years of college and once in her final year of high school.

Her grandmother, who once remarked that Winfrey had been on stage since she could speak, would not have been shocked by her decision to pursue a career in journalism. She used to interview the crows on her family’s property’s fence and her corncob doll in games she played as a child. Winfrey subsequently acknowledged the impact of her grandmother, stating that Hattie Mae was the one who “gave me a positive sense of myself” and had inspired her to speak in public.
