“Pathonpatham Noottandu” unveils its grand tapestry with the introduction of a young Arattupuzha Velayudha Panicker as he arrives at the headquarters of the English East India Company in Travancore. His purpose: to secure a permit for the export of cardamom. Little does he know that this seemingly routine visit will thrust him into the heart of a gruesome gladiatorial match orchestrated by British Raj officers and local nobility. This brutal spectacle forces the winner to execute the vanquished, but it is Chekavar, as Velayudha is known, who steps in and ignites a furious melee. Managing to evade capture, Chekavar’s life takes an unexpected and dramatic turn.

Soon, the Maharaja of Travancore summons Velayudha Chekavar to assist in capturing Kayamkulam Kochunni, a notorious outlaw who has pilfered sacred salagram ornaments from the Padmanabhaswamy Temple. However, there’s a significant hurdle to Chekavar’s involvement – he belongs to the Ezhava community, deemed lower caste, and his participation is met with fierce opposition. As the narrative unfolds, it becomes evident that Kochunni’s audacious assault on Paachupanikkar, the commander-in-chief of the Travancore Army, during an attempted capture has led to a substantial reward for information regarding his whereabouts.

In parallel, Kochunni devises a plan to recover the stolen treasure chest, secreted underground near the palace, during the prince’s grand wedding celebration. Chekavar’s efforts to construct a Shiva temple for the lower-caste individuals challenge the deeply entrenched societal norms and result in his arrest on the orders of the Diwan. Worshiping an idol is considered a transgression for the lower castes, and Chekavar’s actions defiantly challenge this oppressive convention. While incarcerated, his life is threatened by the deputy commander-in-chief, Padaveedan Nambi, and the naduvazhi Panikkasseri Kaimal, who conspire to poison him. It is Inspector Kannan Kurup, the son of the former commander-in-chief, who ultimately comes to Chekavar’s rescue.

The queen intervenes, ordering Chekavar’s release and seeking his assistance in recovering the stolen ornaments and capturing Kochunni. Amidst the tumult of a royal wedding celebration, Kochunni makes his move to retrieve the hidden chest. Kurup apprehends him but negotiates a deal, allowing Kochunni to escape in exchange for a share of the stolen loot. The plot thickens as Kochunni and Kurup attempt to sell the chest to Looper, an Englishman dealing in ivory and antiques. Once again, Chekavar reenters the fray, embarking on a fierce battle to regain the treasure while Kurup and Looper make their desperate escape. Kochunni finds himself incarcerated, and the Maharaja announces a substantial reward for his capture.

Surprisingly, despite the substantial reward, the ministers advise against directly awarding it to Chekavar in adherence to untouchability laws. In a display of principled defiance, Chekavar refuses the reward. In an act of honor, the Maharaja bestows upon him the title of Panicker, and he becomes renowned as Arattupuzha Velayudha Panicker. However, trouble brews as Kurup encounters Kochunni in prison and is offered stolen gold coins in exchange for assassinating Velayudha Panicker.

Amidst this turmoil, the lower-caste communities continue to endure brutal atrocities. Women who dare to cover their ankles, wear nose rings, or shield their breasts from public view face merciless punishment. In an act of protest, Panicker advocates that all women should have the right to cover their chests, wear long dothi, and don nose rings while performing the Poothan dance during the Perumpoothan Thullal, a sacred ritual. He provides garments and nose rings to women, asserting their intrinsic right to dignity.

During the ritual, Panikkasseri Kaimal and Padaveedan Nambi disrupt the proceedings, sparking a violent confrontation. Panicker and Nangeli, a woman who stands in solidarity with him, valiantly defend the rights of the lower castes. In the heat of the moment, Panicker slays Nambi. Kurup and Kochunni’s accomplice, Bava, manage to escape, but Panicker apprehends Bava.

The following day, within the palace durbar, the Diwan and Kaimal demand action against Panicker for breaking ritual protocols and for the killing of Nambi. Fearless, Panicker appears before the king, expressing his satisfaction at having eliminated a traitor. Bava’s confession reveals that Nambi and the naduvazhi Chandrupilla had provided insider information about Paachupanikkar’s plot to apprehend Kochunni and had been handsomely rewarded. Bava is imprisoned, while Chandrupilla is sentenced to death for treason. The king proclaims that the final verdict will be delivered the following day, continuing the trial.

Panicker and his followers embark on a journey to Cherthala after the cremation of his grandfather, where a temple idol installation ceremony takes place. His odyssey eventually leads him to Ananthapuri, but treacherous conspiracies lurk in the shadows. Kaimal and Raman Thambi bribe Kandappan, one of Panicker’s trusted confidants, to assassinate him. Kandappan poisons the tender coconut drinks served to Panicker and others aboard a boat, setting the stage for a deadly confrontation. With the aid of the king’s confidant, Rudran, Kaimal and his associates execute Bava. As the poison takes its toll, Kaimal and his co-conspirators launch a brutal assault on Panicker, resulting in a climactic battle that leaves Panicker triumphant but mortally wounded.

Pathonpatham Noottandu Movie Download Review Filmyzilla

“Pathonpatham Noottandu” stands as a testament to the transformative power of cinema. This period drama is more than a mere movie; it is a portal to the past, offering an intimate glimpse into the challenges and triumphs of individuals who dared to challenge the entrenched social norms of their time.

Vinayan’s direction and storytelling prowess are nothing short of remarkable. His script weaves a captivating narrative that not only entertains but also educates and inspires. By choosing to illuminate the story of Arattupuzha Velayudha Chekavar, a warrior from the marginalized Ezhava community who rose to confront social injustices, Vinayan shines a light on the deep-seated caste prejudices that plagued 19th-century society.

The film’s visual splendor is a testament to the skill of cinematographer Shaji Kumar, who brings the era to life with stunning visuals. Every frame is a work of art, and viewers are transported to the heart of 19th-century Kerala, thanks to the meticulous production design by Ajayan Challissery. The costumes, designed by Dhanya Balakrishnan, are a visual treat, capturing the essence of the period. Vivek Harshan’s editing keeps the narrative tight and engaging, ensuring that viewers remain immersed in the story.

The musical score, composed by Santhosh Narayanan, and the soul-stirring music by M. Jayachandran elevate the emotional impact of the film. These elements, combined with the evocative performances of the cast, create a truly immersive cinematic experience.

In the role of Velayudha Chekavar, Siju Wilson delivers a tour de force performance. He completely immerses himself in the character, bringing authenticity to every aspect, from horseback riding to nuanced facial expressions. Kayadu Lohar’s portrayal of Nangeli, the fearless woman who defied the oppressive breast tax, is equally commendable. Her depiction of Nangeli’s unwavering stand against casteism is both powerful and poignant. Vishnu Vinay, who portrays Kannan Kurup, delivers a stellar performance, marking him as a rising star in the industry.

One of the film’s notable aspects is Vinayan’s decision to cast actors based on their suitability for the roles rather than their star power. This bold choice adds authenticity to the characters and strengthens the film’s impact. Furthermore, the film’s subject matter is commendable. “Pathonpatham Noottandu” represents a significant step toward greater representation in Indian cinema, as it offers a perspective often overlooked—the struggle of the marginalized during the 19th century.

While the film excels in many aspects, it’s essential to acknowledge that some depictions of women may unintentionally cater to the male gaze, such as the fair-skinned portrayal of Nangeli. Nevertheless, this minor blemish does not detract from the film’s overall impact.
