Samuel H ‘Sam’ Altman was born in Chicago, Illinois on April 22, 1985. He was raised in St. Louis, Missouri.
Sam received his first computer in 1993. He later attended the John Burroughs School. He later attended Stanford University, where he studied computer science before dropping out in 2005, at the age of 20.
Altman co-founded Loopt, a location-based social networking smartphone application, when he was 19 years old. Altman raised more than $30 million in venture finance for the company as CEO; nonetheless, Loopt failed to acquire traction with a sufficient number of customers. Green Dot Corporation paid $43.4 million for the company in March 2012. The next month, Altman and his brother, Jack Altman, co-founded Hydrazine Capital. Altman contracted scurvy while working on Loopt.
Altman took over as CEO of Reddit for eight days in 2014, following the resignation of CEO Yishan Wong.On July 10, 2015, he announced the return of Steve Huffman as CEO.
