“It’s an enormous responsibility, but I’m surrounded by such a talented team that’s helping me bring Betty Boop to life. It’s incredibly exciting,” Rogers shared with The Associated Press before her official unveiling.
This new musical is directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell, a two-time Tony Award-winning choreographer and director known for his work in shows like “Kinky Boots,” “Legally Blonde,” “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” “Hairspray,” and “La Cage aux Folles.” Mitchell first noticed Rogers during his work on the musical “Becoming Nancy” at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta in 2019.
“I remember her audition vividly. There was something about her – that ‘it’ factor. Some people just walk in, and you immediately know they’re the one,” Mitchell explained. “I was looking for moxie. I was looking for effervescence. There’s a song at the end of the first act, and when she sang it, she brought tears of joy to my eyes. That’s when I knew she had won the role.”
Mitchell also praised Rogers for her ability to be vulnerable and her infectious laugh, describing it as a “crazy giggle that just makes me giddy.”
The musical boasts songs composed by multiple Grammy Award-winner David Foster, lyrics by Tony Award-nominated Susan Birkenhead, and a story penned by Tony Award-winning book writer Bob Martin (“The Drowsy Chaperone,” “The Prom”).
Betty Boop, an iconic animated character, has been captivating audiences since her debut in 1930. Known for her round eyes, strapless minidress, garter peeking above her knee, and large hoop earrings, Betty Boop was introduced in short films during the Depression era, fluttering her lashes and trilling her signature “Boop-oop-a-doop.”
The creators of the musical have reimagined Betty as an empowered character. “She’s one of those indomitable spirits that can’t be broken,” said Mitchell. “The one thing missing in her life is love, something she’s never experienced in any of her shorts. So she embarks on a journey to find it.”
Rogers emphasized the importance of portraying Betty as a fully-fleshed human being. “I hope that young women who come to see the musical leave feeling inspired, seen, loved, and heard,” she said.
Rogers is among a new generation of actors taking on roles that weren’t originally written with Black women in mind. “I cast Jasmine to fulfill the story we’re telling in this musical,” Mitchell explained. “When you see the musical, you’ll understand why I cast her.”
Rogers attended the Manhattan School of Music for two years before deciding to pursue auditions full-time. Her credits include “The Wanderer” at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey and a role as a 2017 Jimmy Award finalist. She also toured as Gretchen Wieners in “Mean Girls.”
“I attended college for two years, but it wasn’t the right path for me at the time. Then I immediately booked ‘Becoming Nancy,'” Rogers shared. “This has been a lifelong dream, and now it’s finally happening. I’ve been working really hard since I was 7 years old.”
Betty Boop has maintained a prominent role in popular culture, making appearances in events like the 1995 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and even having a cameo in the 1988 feature film “Who Framed Roger Rabbit.” Fleischer Studios, the creators of her cartoons, are backing this new musical venture.
“I always dreamed of doing something like this and bringing to life a character as beloved as Betty, but I never in a million years thought I’d be playing Betty herself. It’s truly surreal,” Rogers expressed.
