In 1998, while still a junior in college, McHenry took a significant step into the political arena. He ran for the North Carolina House of Representatives. Although he won the Republican primary, he faced defeat in the general election.
He didn’t let this setback deter him. In 1999, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. Subsequently, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked for the media consulting firm DCI/New Media. During this time, he was notably involved in Rick Lazio’s campaign for the 2000 United States Senate election in New York. One of his primary responsibilities was managing a website called NotHillary.com.
In 2012, McHenry received an honorary Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree in entrepreneurship from Yorktown University.
